Job Description

We are harnessing machine learning to revolutionize the bioeconomy. Bioinformatics and machine learning will enable numerous steps in synthetic biological processes and generate novel solutions for a sustainable future. Come join our venture to engineer the tools of the future economy. You will be one of the early employees, having an outsized impact, shaping the company through your efforts, scientific experience and industry expertise. We are incubated at Merantix, an AI Venture Studio which conceptualizes, builds and scales machine learning companies. Merantix is distinct in its attraction of world-class talents, trust from European´s leading organizations and dynamic culture across its ventures. Our team is made up of 60 engineers, scientists, and entrepreneurs from leading universities. Many of us hold a Ph.D. and gained experience at top-tier tech companies.

We are looking for a Systems Metabolic Engineer to enhance our team and to help us build the next generation of machine learning applications for the bioeconomy.

You will use a combination of Genome-scale metabolic models (GSSM) and machine learning to build the most accurate organismal models to date. Working with our academic and industry partners, you will create ‘in silico’ models to aid in strain optimization. Additionally, you will help build infrastructure that enables data gathering and experimental planning at scale. The tasks are diverse and non-repetitive, as we constantly receive new projects from industrial and academic partners. Successful projects will be highly automated via clean, maintainable code. You will work in a team with biologists, bioinformaticians, machine learning experts and business analysts to create the newest tools to enable the bioeconomy.

Your main responsibilities will include:

  • Augment and develop current GSSMs using the latest in machine learning techniques;
  • Work closely with our academic and industrial partners to design experiments and steer the venture’s part in the collaboration;
  • Deploy models at partners as needed;
  • Keep up-to-date with the latest advances in the field;
  • Drive long-term success by building or integrating new technologies;
  • Manage multiple projects allowing us to deliver useful tools to our partners as well as internal proof of concepts;
  • Develop a scientific and technical vision of the venture together with a collaborative, interdisciplinary and entrepreneurial team.

We define ourselves by a culture of ownership and cooperation. We are looking for driven, capable, visionary and prudent talents with proven track records of personal, academic and professional achievement:

  • MSc or PhD in Chemical or Biological Engineering with experience in metabolomics and machine learning;
  • Exceptional competence in GSSMs and experience in applied machine learning and software engineering and its application in biology;
  • Mathematics background, experience with supervised learning, dynamic systems and control theory, ODE solvers and multivariate statistics;
  • Experience with several of the following technologies: Google Cloud Platform, TensorFlow, Apache Beam, Google Cloud ML, Docker, or PyTorch;
  • Passion for exploration and execution of ‘proof of concept’ projects;
  • Intense drive to learn new skills and utilize new technologies;
  • Ability to work in a fast paced environment, dealing with uncertainty and building something from the ground up;
  • Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills.

Our hierarchy is flat and communication direct, which means that we operate and learn fast, as a team. You are a great fit for our team if this describes you:

  • Entrepreneurial mindset: creative, focused, and not easily discouraged;
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, highly innovative environment where ambiguity is the norm;
  • Excellent analytical problem-solving skills, with the ability to step back and contextualize the problem and its root;
  • Independent but cooperative mindset;
  • Strong organizational and multitasking skills with the ability to prioritize appropriately and effectively;
  • Love what you do (and own it).

In addition to a competitive salary and equity package, you can expect the following:

  • Flexible working hours as we believe in ownership and trust;
  • Learning & Development Program for all our team members;
  • Regular team events and intensive exchange with all Merantix companies;
  • Free drinks, snacks and breakfast.

We are an equal-opportunity employer and value diversity. We consider all applications equally regardless of race, color, ancestry, religion, sex, national origin, sexual orientation, age, citizenship, marital status, disability, or gender identity. We strongly encourage individuals from groups traditionally underrepresented in tech to apply, and we can help with immigration.
