The Software Engineer (m/w/d) - based in Munich area, Wessling - will design, implement and support medical device software for a surgical robotic system. A strong focus will be on the integration of interfaces for testing. The position is also intended as point of contact between development and verification groups. Thus, reviews and understanding of test designs, test cases as well as reviews of the developed software and accompanying requirements are also part of the role.

The developed software controls hardware devices, such as robotic arms and actuators. The software also interacts with sensors, GPIO devices and other physical hardware, communicates with microcontrollers and with other networked devices through Ethernet-based middleware, fieldbus technology, and monitors/responds to diverse conditions.

A Day in the Life

  • Design software for a robotic minimally invasive surgery system
  • Be an integral part of the development team

- Collaborate closely with on- and offsite verification teams

  • Review and refactor existing code and designs to improve testability
  • Produce documentation describing the design
  • Produce high quality C++ code consistent with the written design
  • Implement unit tests and uses static analysis tools to identify and address potential defects
  • Integrate software with electronics and hardware
  • Participate in reviews of requirements, design, implementation and tests to ensure quality standards are met and testing aspects are addressed adequately
  • Analyze unexpected, undesirable or non-understood behavior in software and in interactions of software with hardware
  • Document results of defect analysis
  • Follow the ISO 62304 standard and project documents such as the software development plan and coding standards

Must Haves

  • Bachelor or preferably Master Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related engineering discipline.
  • Minimum of 4 years of relevant experience, or advanced degree with a minimum of 2 years relevant experience.
  • Background in embedded software development in C++ or C.
  • Experience in software verification
  • Basic understanding of standard OS features (e.g. threading and concurrency, memory management, device drivers, I/O, etc.). Experience with real-time operating systems is a plus
  • Fluent in English – written and spoken. German at least on conversational level
  • Ability to travel for a few weeks per year

  • Skills in strategic thinking, problem solving attitude, good planning and time management

Nice to Haves

  • Experience in Linux, Windows application programming and scripting
  • Embedded programming experience
  • Coding skills in Python
  • Significant C++ 11 skills.
  • Experience with Matlab/Simulink.
  • Know-how with software infrastructure development to support data logging, network communication, software installation, network configuration, etc.
  • Know-how in field-bus technology (EtherCAT preferred), standard embedded communication protocols (SPI, I2C, AXI, UART, etc.), communication middleware (e.g. DDS)
  • Familiarity with Agile software development processes
  • Experience implementing software for medical products under ISO 62304 or other regulated industry.


Working Conditions
Standard Office setting in Wessling, near Munich and Work-from-Home. Some limited travel may be required.
