We look forward to you joining us at Telecom & Navigation Processing Design Center of Ottobrunn within Airbus Defence and Space.

Location : Munich - Ottobrunn

Start : as soon as possible

Duration : 6 months

With the raising importance of Artificial Intelligence and in particular computationally intensive Convolutional Neural Networks evaluating inference performance to compare different processing platforms has become a key challenge in system design. The commercial market has developed different performance benchmarks that have been used to evaluate mostly GPUs for datacentres, but the evaluation of platforms suitable for a COTS processing platform in space equipment and with models that are close to real scenario applications is still unanswered.

The goal of this project is to benchmark state of art neural networks and other machine learning algorithms for Satellite applications to assess the feasibility of implementing these algorithms on spacecraft. In a second phase a new application for a future missions will implemented on the most promising data processing unit.

As a student in our department you will learn about development of On-board FPGA/ASIC logic and processor solutions for satellite subsystems and on-board navigation instruments.

Your exciting tasks:

  • Learning about state of art Neural Networks for Satellite Applications
  • Trade off of the most promising COTS data processing units for Spacecraft (including but not limited to Xilinx MPSoC and Myriad VPU)
  • Implementing a demonstration of such algorithms on the target platform (Using autocoding tools or generic VHDL/HLS)
  • Benchmarking, evaluating and documenting the performance of the solution

You offer:

  • Enrolled student (d/f/m) within Electrical Engineering, Telecommunication Engineering or similar field of study
  • Experience in tools like VHDL/SW Design Tools, Signal Processing and/or Image Processing; experience with Xilinx FPGA, Vivado, Vitis, FINN, HLS and/or Myriad VPUs would be an asset
  • Programming Language VHDL and/or C/C++
  • First Experience with Tensorflow or PyTorch and with inference of Neural Networks on embedded processing platforms
  • Experienced and excited by new MPSoC FPGA architectures, Machine Learning and Spacecraft
  • English is mandatory; German would be an asset
  • You are a good team player, have excellent communication skills, and are able to work independently
