Full time Data Science Data Analytics Big Data Data Management Statistics

Job Description

You will drive data-based innovation by developing analytical models that will quantify impacts to one of the largest industries in the world - the petrochemical industry - a complex global supply network. As Senior Data Scientist, you will join our existing team of experienced Data Scientists and work closely together with our large team of market analysts around the globe. Our models enable scenario analysis on prices and market fundamentals to support decision making in trading and operation. You will be part of an international team, which requires occasional travel globally. As of day one, you will have responsibility in demanding analytics innovation projects - your first focus will be to support the market introduction of a new innovative data product which predicts the cost of production of all major production plants globally as well as likely fundamental based price floors & ceilings in global trading (“cost curves”). You will grow into being the main responsible Data Scientist for this solution and to develop further innovation on top of the data.

Key Accountabilities/Responsibilities:

  • Drive and support R&D and operation of data-driven analytical market models: Co-develop with our analysts and market experts strong quantitative market models to predict key market variables drawing from multiple techniques; guide and support others in the development of models as well as create hands-on own implementations of new models and enhancements, for example drive automation of models in a cloud environment
  • Engage with our customers and internal market experts to explain our models and insights as well as discuss the petrochemical market structure and key drivers - translate gained domain knowledge back into models and build a deep understanding of operation and decision making in our markets
  • Take own project management responsibility on model developments and work with cross-functional stakeholders including analysts, product manager, head of analysis as well as technology and data operations to set realistic project timeline and output expectations and align on plans and requirements effectively
  • Enable our customers and internal market analysts to derive high-quality impact analysis from operational models, constantly seeking to improve the insight and the workflow
  • Program required routines and data preparations; create smart ways to visualise data and mitigate data gaps with reasonable assumptions and estimates
  • In model development, take and educate others on a sustainable perspective to ensure (a) models stay understandable (b) seamless model operation and (c) scalability of the approach including use of existing best practices and software standards, efficient interaction with data, and best use of infrastructure
  • Continuously improve best practice with our global Data Science team and our Technology team on model infrastructure, our development approach, operational and software development standards, and other key aspects of the work. Take ownership on one or more aspects and establish better ways of working
  • Develop & retain our market modelling talent with option of people management responsibility
  • Constantly learn new techniques and apply to existing and new analytical problems in our markets. Actively share knowledge and innovation areas with peers

Key Skills/Experience Required:

  • Minimum of 5 to 7 years of practical experience in predictive modelling, preferably in the context of price prediction or markets – a good holistic overview of different modelling techniques and existing experience in one of the following fields we use: assumption based scenario forecasting & simulation, agent based modelling, statistics & econometrics, mathematical optimization, time series prediction with machine learning
  • Ability to rapidly learn new model domains and become conversant in the domain with external contacts and subject matter experts
  • Experience to organise projects and teams in a self-driven way and align teams, tasks and expectations; habit of starting simple first using proof of concepts to test hypothesis and iterate to add value
  • Holistic perspective on business value from analytics and strong ability to explain to diverse stakeholders first-hand at the right level, strong communication and engagement
  • Advanced programming skills (we use Python) and SQL, able to write efficient SQL queries
  • Experience in using relational databases (warehouses) and file-based structures (data lakes) and agreeing with others on fit-for-purpose data structures within such systems as well as writing data routines (no need to administrate the database)
  • Basics of software development (modularisation, versioning eg with GIT, tests, understandable code)
  • University degree in a quantitative science field
  • A strong interest in the global petrochemical supply network and markets which are essential to make modern life possible

  • Curious about everything, willing to ask questions and challenge the status quo in order to provide better customer, employee and business outcomes
  • Passionate about providing a world-class customer experience
