We collect data and insight about our industries and enhance it with deep market understanding and Data Science tools to predict future market developments and help decision making. To date, we have experience in operating up to a million of automated data jobs per day including a wide range of analytical models from statistical to machine learning, large scale optimisation and agent based models.

Job Purpose:

You will be part of our centralised ICIS Data Science team which focuses on model innovation and supports our market centric analyst teams with efficiency and automation. Your specific role will be to contribute with deep technical expertise to the design of a new integrated model ecosystem across the most important energy commodities of the near future – power, carbon emission certificates (CO2), gas and hydrogen. You will add value to our team of quantitative energy market analysts, who write Python code and own database queries. Your guidance and hands-on support will help the team to set up models and data pipelines for automation, as well as understand new model infrastructure enhancements and successfully roll them out. Since you are connected into the central Data Science team, you will draw from global best practise and contribute to its evolution with own ideas.

Key Accountabilities/Responsibilities:

  • Drive and support R&D and operation of data-driven analytical market models: Co-develop with our analysts strong quantitative market models to predict key market variables such as prices, supply and demand drawing from multiple techniques; guide and support others in the technical implementation of models as well as create hands-on own model components and enhancements, for example drive automation of models in a cloud environment
  • In model development, take and educate others on a sustainable perspective to ensure (a) models stay understandable (b) seamless model operation and (c) scalability of the approach including use of existing best practices and software standards, efficient interaction with data, and best use of infrastructure. Anticipate where problems may occur.
  • Continuously improve best practice with our global Data Science team and our Technology team on model infrastructure, our development approach, operational and software development standards, and other key aspects of the work. Take ownership on one or more aspects and establish better ways of working
  • Program required routines and data preparations; create smart ways to visualise data and mitigate data gaps with reasonable estimates
  • Constantly explore new techniques and apply to existing and new analytical problems in our markets. Actively share knowledge and innovation areas with peers
  • Enable our customers and internal market analysts to derive high-quality impact analysis from operational models, constantly seeking to improve the insight and the workflow
  • Take own project management responsibility on model developments and work with cross-functional stakeholders including analysts, product manager, head of analysis as well as technology and data operations to set realistic project timeline and output expectations and align on plans and requirements effectively
  • Join engagements with our customers and internal market experts to explain our models and insights as well as discuss the market structure and key drivers - translate gained domain knowledge back into models and build a deep understanding of operation and decision making in our markets
  • Develop & retain our market modelling talent with option of people management responsibility

Key Skills/Experience Required:

  • Minimum of 5 to 7 years of practical experience in modelling and model operation – a good holistic overview of different modelling techniques and existing experience in large scale linear/mixed integer programming plus one the following fields we use: statistics & econometrics, time series prediction with machine learning, assumption-based scenario forecasting & simulation, agent-based modelling; you are used to trade-offs on computational complexity
  • Ability to rapidly learn new model domains and become conversant in the domain with contacts and subject matter experts, preferably existing knowledge of economics/markets
  • Advanced programming skills (we use Python & GAMS) and SQL, able to write efficient SQL queries, LP/MIP solver experience (we use Gurobi, CPLEX)
  • Experience in using relational databases (warehouses) and file-based structures (data lakes) and agreeing with others on fit-for-purpose data structures within such systems as well as writing data routines (no need to administrate the database)
  • Experience with containerisation (we use Docker)
  • Holistic perspective on business value from analytics and strong ability to explain to diverse stakeholders first-hand at the right level, strong communication and engagement
  • Basics of software development (modularisation, versioning eg with GIT, tests, understandable code)
