FCAS – Shaping the future European Air Power

FCAS has the potential to become a future key pillar to secure the sovereignty of Europe, strategically, technologically, and industrially! With Spain joining the Franco-German cooperation, the programme took an important step towards its Europeanization. As FCAS is much more than “just” a new Fighter, but an integrated & combined system-of-system including existing and future platforms and tools, the programme will integrate a wide range of the Airbus DS portfolio and competencies.

FCAS (Future Combat Air Systems) will be the Defence programme of the future for Europe and will ensure Future Air Power supremacy, the key to European and national sovereignty. In the most complex threat scenarios, FCAS will deliver increasing operational effects by leveraging the collaborative capabilities of connected platforms, bringing the next level of Air Power in highly denied environments. Airbus uniquely combines the experience, capabilities and footprint to drive with our industrial partners this strategic defence programme.

New doctrines, processes and skills need to be gradually developed in alignment with the planned arrival of FCAS capabilities and meeting the related technological challenges. FCAS will require a step by step approach to be jointly tackled by European air forces, navies and industry.

his position provides you the opportunity to perform technology and system development in an industrial environment. You will be part of the Avionics System Design and Technology Team of Airbus Military Aircraft Engineering located in Manching/Germany. The work will focus on cooperating airborne manned/unmanned platforms within FCAS program. This also addresses cross-platform collaborative sensing functions which are to be implemented in future avionics mission systems of aircrafts. This includes sensors, computing hardware, and system software. Your work will include:

  • Analysis of customer needs and design requirements on avionics system level
  • Breakdown of requirements to sub-system level
  • Assessment and analysis of airborne candidate technologies
  • Assessment and development of design requirements for single- and multi-platform interacting sensor systems
  • Implementation of prototypes and demonstrators using future avionics hardware platforms, including verification of the developed technologies
  • Participation in research and development projects involving multiple stakeholders
  • Presentation of results to the internal and external project partners

The successful applicant will have the following skills and experiences:

  • Educated to PhD or Master Degree level (or equivalent) in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Aeronautical Engineering, Computer Science, Informatics, or similar
  • Solid academic background in sensor data processing, sensor data fusion and sensor management
  • Able to perform in an environment that promotes independent work
  • Deep interest in cooperative systems, cognitive robotics, autonomy and artificial intelligence
  • Experiences in embedded/hardware-near software development, preferable for airborne mission systems
  • Good skills in programming, C/C++, Java, ADA, Python, as well as in Linux, GCC and make scripts, preferably already applied to embedded systems
  • Ability and interest to perform self-motivated work in an international project context
  • You are a good team player, have excellent communication skills, and can work independently.
