Umweltbundesamt

"For people and the environment" is the motto of the Federal Environment Agency - UBA for short - and sums up what we are there for. As Germany's central environmental authority, we ensure that Germany has a healthy environment in which people can live protected as far as possible from harmful environmental influences, such as pollutants in the air or water. Our range of topics is wide - from waste avoidance and climate protection to the approval of plant protection products. Our job is to collect data on the state of the environment, research connections, make forecasts for the future and use this knowledge to advise the federal government, such as the Federal Ministry for the Environment, on their policies. But also to inform the public about environmental issues and to be there for their questions, is one of our tasks. In addition, we enforce environmental laws, i.e. put them into practice. Examples of this are emissions trading and the approval of chemicals, pharmaceuticals and plant protection products. The tasks of the UBA are defined in the law on the establishment of a Federal Environment Agency. The UBA sees itself as an early warning system that recognizes possible future impairments of people and the environment in good time, evaluates them and proposes practicable solutions. To this end, the office's experts conduct research in their own laboratories and award research contracts to scientific facilities and institutes in Germany and abroad. In addition, we are Germany's partner and contact point for numerous international institutions such as the World Health Organization (WHO).
