Essen University Medicine comprises the Essen University Hospital and twelve subsidiaries, including the Ruhrland Clinic, St. Josef Hospital Werden, Huttrop Heart Surgery and the West German Proton Therapy Center Essen. With around 1,700 beds, Essen University Medicine is the leading health competence center in the Ruhr area and is on the way to becoming a smart hospital. In 2018, our 8,500 employees treated 72,000 inpatients and 300,000 outpatients. The main areas of focus are cardiovascular medicine, oncology and transplantation. With the West German Tumor Center, one of the largest tumor centers in Germany, the West German Center for Organ Transplantation, a leading international center for transplantation, where our specialists transplant all vital organs including liver, kidney, pancreas, heart and lung, as well as the West German Heart and Vascular Center, a supra-regional center for maximum cardiovascular care, the University Medicine Essen has a significance for the care of patients that extends far beyond the region. The essential basis for clinical performance is the research at the Medical Faculty of the University of Duisburg-Essen with its clear focus on oncology, transplantation, cardiovascular medicine, as well as the overarching research focuses of immunology, infectiology and translational neuro- and behavioral sciences.
