IT Server Expert (m/f/d)
Computer Science, Software Engineering, Data Science
Pay grade 10 TVöD Bund (Federal Public Service Collective Agreement) Permanent Full-time

Your tasks:

The PTB's IT department is organized into five sections and divided between the Braunschweig and Berlin locations, which work closely together. Section 9.55, "High-Performance Computing," at the PTB's Berlin location, operates compute servers and a high-performance computing cluster running Linux for demanding scientific calculations as a service for the PTB's specialist departments, as well as other virtualized server infrastructure. You will support our team with the following tasks:

  • Administrative tasks in the area of ​​Linux, OSS and Windows servers
  • Responsibility for IT user administration and access rights management at the Berlin location, as well as further automation of processes in server operations.
  • Participation in the administration of the PTB's High Performance Compute (HPC) cluster
  • Support and guidance for scientific users; introducing new PTB users to the use of HPC capacities for PTB research
  • Provision and installation of specialist physics applications in the field of computational physics (e.g. FEM software, OpenFOAM, Geant4)
  • Contributing to the strategic development of the server infrastructure, with a focus on container technology, scalability, robustness, energy efficiency, and AI applications.
  • Maintenance and documentation of the software installation and cluster configuration

Your profile:

  • Completed studies (Bachelor / FH diploma) in the field of computer science, software engineering, data science, computational engineering, scientific computing, simulation science or comparable proven qualification.
  • Experience in Linux system administration; sound knowledge of Linux automation (shell scripting, Python, Ansible, etc.)
  • Practical knowledge in the administration of servers, services and user accounts, also under Windows
  • Willingness to familiarize oneself with new tools in the area of ​​user management and access rights.
  • Experience in providing scientific software to users in the field of numerical methods and computational physics.
  • Knowledge of distributed file systems, parallel programming models, processor architectures in the field of high-performance computing, modern storage technologies, and research data (management) is advantageous.
  • Ideally, experience in server virtualization (e.g., Proxmox)
  • Sensitivity to data protection and IT security issues; advanced knowledge of the BSI requirements
  • Strong service orientation and enjoyment of IT support for researchers
  • Independent and structured work style as well as didactic talent
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills
  • German (C1 level) and English (B2 level) skills
  • Willingness to travel on business
