The Laboratory for Machine Tools and Production Engineering (WZL) at RWTH Aachen University has been synonymous worldwide for decades with successful and forward-looking research and innovation in production technology. In close collaboration with partners from industry and academia, we work on research and development topics that significantly influence the future of production.

The Innovation Management department at the Chair of Production Systems focuses on innovative approaches along the entire product development process. A current focus is on developing AI-supported methods for improving master data quality in manufacturing companies. For this purpose, our department has developed its own master data processing tool, which we are continuously refining.

In this environment, our student assistants are a key part of our team. We therefore welcome long-term collaboration and offer diverse opportunities for personal and professional development – ​​including independent project work, training courses, and participation in interdisciplinary project teams.

Your profile

You should bring the following:

• Studies in Data Science, Computer Science, Automation Engineering or a comparable field of study
• Excellent programming skills, ideally Python
• Experience in working with relational databases
• Knowledge of version control systems (e.g., Git)
• Ability to maintain an overview in a large software project
• Interest in digital innovations in the area of ​​data quality and product development
• High motivation, willingness to learn, independence and teamwork skills

Nice to have:

• Initial experience in web application development (ideally Django)
• Basic knowledge of natural language processing (NLP)
• First contact with data engineering or MLOps topics

Your tasks

The tasks in this field are varied and practice-oriented. In addition to innovative research projects, our department handles demanding consulting projects with industry partners. Our goal is to enable you to work independently and flexibly from an early stage. Your tasks will include, in particular:

• Support in the development of natural language processing (NLP) methodologies for automated master data cleansing
• Support in integrating the developed methods into the existing frontend and backend of our master data tool.
• Participation in the further development and maintenance of relational database models
• Bug fixing and quality assurance during ongoing development
• Adapting the tool to individual tasks
• Support with structured data preparation and analysis
