The State Agency for Nature, Environment and Climate NRW (LANUK) is the state's technical and scientific authority for all matters relating to nature, the environment, and climate. As a subordinate agency of the NRW Ministry for the Environment, we collect, analyze, and evaluate data on air and water quality as well as the state of nature. We document climate change and develop strategies to mitigate it and adapt to its consequences. We also review safety concepts for industrial plants, record pollutant emissions, address issues related to recycling and waste management, and collect data on noise, radiation, and vibrations – and this list is not exhaustive! In our laboratories, we examine water and air quality and analyze solid samples, such as soil or waste. We provide the results of our measurements, analyses, and calculations, along with our recommendations, to other authorities implementing local measures and to policymakers. Our experts are consulted on complex issues. Through collaboration with various agencies within the environmental administration, LANUK undertakes tasks that are relevant to the entire state of NRW or require specialized expertise. LANUK employs around 1,200 people with a wide range of training, specializations, and qualifications at locations throughout North Rhine-Westphalia. These include laboratory technicians, technical assistants, engineers, specialists in engineering, natural sciences, forestry, law, and administration.
