*The primary location for this position is Hamburg.*

As Head of Data Engineering & Architecture (all genders), you will assume strategic and operational responsibility for building, developing, and scaling our data and AI capabilities. You will combine technological excellence with entrepreneurial thinking and actively shape high-growth customer relationships and a high-performing portfolio in the data and AI environment.

WHAT TO EXPECT

• You will be responsible for the professional and disciplinary leadership of an international, multifunctional team (Data Architecture & Data Engineering) with 8 direct reports and over 35 project employees in Germany, Portugal, Romania and India.
• You will strategically develop the unit further – particularly with regard to architecture, operating model and service portfolio.
• You are responsible for the portfolio (pipeline, capacity utilization and delivery quality).
• You are responsible for account management and the expansion of existing customers – especially within the VW Group.
• You actively shape pre-sales activities and opportunities together with Sales and Strategy.
• You translate modern AI and data capabilities into scalable, customer-relevant solutions.
• You integrate KPIs, quality gates, and regulatory requirements into the delivery process.
• You build and further develop distributed teams and leadership structures.
• Tech environment (current status): Multi-cloud (Azure, AWS), modern data platforms, group-wide AI initiatives within the VW Group, and platform services in the transition from project-based to product- and service-oriented delivery.

WHAT YOU BRING

Must-haves

• More than 5 years of leadership experience in a senior leadership role (e.g., Director / Head of) with disciplinary responsibility for distributed teams
• Several years of in-depth experience in data architecture and data engineering, including cloud platforms (Azure, AWS, GCP)
• Demonstrable responsibility for a portfolio
• Experience in pre-sales and in building service portfolios
• Confident handling of stakeholders at the C-level or VP level
• Experience in dealing with regulatory requirements (e.g. GDPR, EU AI Act)
• Pronounced servant-leadership mindset
• Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
• German and English at a negotiation-level fluency (C1+)

Nice-to-haves

• Experience in the automotive industry or in production-related industries
• Experience with modern AI technologies, e.g., LLMs, RAG, agentic architectures or MLOps
• Experience in platform modernization and consolidation programs
• Familiarity with structures and processes within the VW Group
• Experience in managing nearshore/offshore teams (Portugal, Romania, India)
