Within the Horizon third-party funded project “European AI Commons – Shaping AI for the Creative and Cultural Industries (EAiCCI)” (Call: HORIZON-CL2-2025-01-HERITAGE-04 — Leveraging artificial intelligence for creativity-driven innovation), a position is available at the Film University as soon as possible as

Project employee – Data Infrastructure & AI/ML (Full-time 40 hours - Part-time possible, up to pay grade 13 TV-L)

The position is limited until 31.8.2028 with the option of an extension by one year corresponding to the project duration (until 31.8.2029).

Project description:

EAiCCI is a Horizon Europe Research and Innovation Action (RIA) coordinated by the Film University Babelsberg KONRAD WOLF. The project develops transparent, sovereign, and democratic AI alternatives for the European cultural and creative industries (CCI) and builds a shared AI infrastructure that brings together artistic practice, rights- and values-based technology, and education. Methodologically, the project follows a European-by-design approach and develops rights-compliant small-data methods for the sector in three phases: data collection and analysis, material and technology development, and dissemination. The consortium comprises nine partners from eight European countries , including three universities, three cultural networks or NGOs, and three SMEs, thus connecting academic research, artistic practice, technology development, and policy advice.
The Film University coordinates the project over its entire duration of 36 months and, together with the consortium partner PLEIAS, is also responsible for the technical work packages for setting up the project infrastructure and developing small-data AI methods.

The position advertised here involves building the EAiCCI data infrastructure and web platform in close collaboration with the consortium partner PLEIAS and in close consultation with the research group leader at the Film University, and developing small-data AI methods for the cultural and creative industries. The position combines software development with conceptual work on metadata, provenance, and rights compliance, ensuring a usable, interoperable, and European-standard-compliant technical foundation for the project.

The tasks include, in particular:
  • Research and concept development for the technical implementation of the European-by-Design principle
  • Conception and development of the modular, web-based internal EAiCCI infrastructure for data collection, processing, storage and publication, including user management, access rights and GDPR-compliant data processing.
  • Development of metadata schemas, controlled vocabularies and provenance standards in accordance with the ontology developed in the project, as well as ensuring compatibility with European research infrastructures.
  • Development of the public EAiCCI web platform for uploading, viewing, editing and annotating structured and unstructured data, including an open API.
  • Conception and development of AI-supported tools for navigation and communication, including a chatbot trained on the EAiCCI corpus.
  • Support in integrating the small data machine learning pipelines developed by PLEIAS into the project platform, as well as contributing to the content development of AI-supported tools for content creation, particularly with regard to artistic applicability and user-friendliness.
  • Conception and implementation of user studies for validation
  • Further development and maintenance of infrastructure and tools in the second half of the project, including bug fixes, security updates, and limited iterative enhancements in accordance with changing project requirements.

They are dedicated, service- and results-oriented, enjoy taking on new challenges, and also possess the following qualifications:

  • a completed university degree (MA, M.Sc., Diplom (Uni) or equivalent) in a subject relevant to the field of work (e.g. in media informatics, computer science, data science, computational media, digital humanities or comparable disciplines).
The following are also required and must be proven:
  • Solid practical experience in software development, especially in building web-based applications and database architectures, as well as in handling common backend and frontend technologies.
  • Knowledge of the design and implementation of APIs, data models and metadata schemas
  • Knowledge in the development of machine learning methods, with a particular interest in resource-efficient, small-data methods as well as in legally compliant and transparent AI development for the cultural and creative industries.
  • Strong teamwork skills as well as communication and organizational skills
  • Confident handling of common development and collaboration tools as well as version control (e.g. Git, CI/CD, project management and ticketing systems) and with cloud or server-based infrastructures
  • Excellent English skills (working language of the consortium) and good German skills (working language at the Film University), both spoken and written.
The following are also desired for the fulfillment of the aforementioned tasks:
  • Practical experience with machine learning frameworks and pipelines (e.g., PyTorch, Hugging Face) as well as with parameter-efficient adaptation methods (e.g., LoRA, Adapter, Prompt-Tuning)
  • Experience in the development of chatbots, AI-supported assistance systems, or generative applications for audiovisual or cultural content
  • Knowledge of the FAIR principles and European research data infrastructures (e.g. EOSC, AI-on-Demand) as well as experience with data management plans.
  • Familiarity with the regulatory environment of European AI development (e.g., AI Act, Data Governance Act) and its implications for technical architecture and licensing decisions.
  • Design or artistic interest as well as experience in the user-centered design of creative or audiovisual tools
  • Experience in technical collaboration on research, development or third-party funded projects, ideally in an international or EU context
