Full job description
Tagesspiegel Background is the Tagesspiegel's B2B specialist information product: professional briefings and political monitoring for ministries, associations, law firms, and companies, available via an annual subscription. We are looking for someone to join our product team who will combine business and product data to create reliable decision-making tools. The role is intentionally broad: you will combine reporting, product analytics, and data quality; further develop our reporting; analyze usage and business development; and contribute to shaping how we measure and evaluate usage and translate it into product decisions.

So you don't just pull a report when asked for one. You also ask yourself: What has changed? Why might that be the case? What further data or qualitative insights do we need to test the hypothesis? One of the questions you investigate is: Which usage patterns best predict contract renewals or cancellations?

You will work closely with product development, growth, sales, and editorial teams, as well as with the publisher's central data team, which is responsible for operations and data pipelines. You will work independently with raw data on specific issues; ongoing processes will be developed in collaboration with the data team.

These are your tasks:
  • You are responsible for data quality in Salesforce, our central source for customer, contract, and revenue data: You find inconsistencies, clean, normalize, and enrich data, and investigate the root causes. Where fields, validations, or processes need to be adjusted, you initiate this with the Salesforce team that manages the platform.
  • You will be responsible for our reporting in Power BI based on Salesforce and the data warehouse – revenue, customer development, retention, forecasts – developing it further and ensuring uniform, documented key performance indicator (KPI) definitions, for example regarding churn in the licensing business, which you will coordinate with sales and publishing management.
  • Together with product development, marketing and growth, you define which events we measure and consolidate data from web tracking, email marketing, landing pages and CRM across the various source systems into a consistent account view.
  • You identify relevant changes and anomalies in our data, formulate hypotheses, and investigate them independently. You don't stop at the first plausible explanation, but examine alternative causes and the reliability of the data.
  • You will further develop analyses of the usage of our website and our product – for example, regarding activation, engagement, depth of use, and likelihood of renewal. From this, you will derive concrete next steps or recommendations for action.
  • For new features and products, you define the criteria for measuring success before launch and evaluate after rollout what has proven successful, for whom, and under what conditions.
  • You prepare your results for editorial staff, sales, and management in such a way that they can serve as a basis for decision-making – methodologically sound, tailored to the target group, and including the limitations of the respective data basis.
You bring the following:
  • Practical experience with Salesforce or a comparable CRM system, not only as a data source, but also in data maintenance and cleansing, for example with DemandTools, Data Loader or Xappex.
  • Approximately three to five years of experience in product analytics or business intelligence – both are welcome, but not required. Experience in a subscription, media, or B2B SaaS environment is advantageous.
  • Strong SQL skills on a cloud warehouse (e.g., BigQuery, Snowflake, Redshift, or Databricks) and experience with a BI tool, in our case Power BI.
  • Solid experience with web and product analytics, including GA4 at the raw data level. Experience in designing custom tracking concepts is a plus.
  • You confidently define, explain, and defend key performance indicators (KPIs), classify what a number means and what it doesn't, and derive next steps from this.
  • You work in a hypothesis-driven and persistent manner. If a signal is interesting, you pursue it until you can clearly distinguish between causes, uncertainties, and consequences.
  • You work in a reproducible and user-friendly way, so that others can understand and build upon your analyses.
  • You naturally use AI tools, but you carefully check their results before sharing them.
  • You have fluent German skills, both spoken and written.

Advantageous, but not a necessity:

  • Experience with a CRM system as a data source, ideally Salesforce
  • Knowledge of Python or R
  • Experience with customer interviews or user research
  • Understanding subscription and licensing models
Here's what we offer you:
  • Creative freedom in a team where ideas are valued and you can implement your visions in an innovative media company in the heart of Berlin.
  • Flat hierarchies with short decision-making processes and direct communication
  • Subsidized BVG company ticket and subsidy for company pension scheme
  • Free digital subscription to Tagesspiegel & Tagesspiegel Plus, Handelsblatt and Die Zeit
  • Opportunities for professional development through the online platform Masterplan to advance your career
  • A 38.5-hour week with 30 days of vacation (for a full-time position), so you have enough time to recover.
  • Flexible working hours and mobile working up to 50%
